21. POWIC Building
TThe Prince of Wales International Centre (POWIC) for SANE Research, was designed by the architect and architectural historian Demetri Porphyrios. The charity SANE (Schizophrenia A National Emergency) wanted to create a centre of excellence devoted to investigating mental illness, which was realised with the opening of POWIC in 2003 by King Charles III, then HRH The Prince of Wales. It was led initially by eminent neuropsychiatrist, the late Professor Tim Crow, OBE. SANE is a leading UK mental health charity, founded by Marjorie Wallace in 1986, dedicated to improving the quality of life for anyone affected by mental illness.
International research teams from the Department of Psychiatry are located at the POWIC Building, studying severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Currently, Oxford Health utilises much of the space to support the medical education team, and as a base for the older adult community mental team supporting older adults in Oxford, city, and for the Oxfordshire Interventional Psychiatry service.
